Jewelry Care

Every piece of Dalva NYC Jewelry is delicately handcrafted with love. Follow the simple guidelines below to ensure your pieces always stay beautiful.

Apply all lotions, oils, and fragrances before putting on your jewelry. Keep all jewelry dry, removing before showering, going to the beach or pool, or using household cleaners. Never store your jewelry in the bathroom due to the humidity level. These tips are especially important in the case of silver, gold vermeil and brass jewelry.

Silver: Our sterling silver jewelry is always made with the industry standard 92.5 fine silver. Silver tarnishes more easily than gold, but with a little care can be beautiful for a lifetime. Wipe your jewelry gently with a soft cloth after you have worn it. Storing silver jewelry in an airtight bag limits the tarnishing process.  If you would like to restore your jewelry’s lustrous finish, a soft bristle toothbrush and soapy water will remove any signs of tarnish. Then rinse the piece in water and dry with a soft cloth.

Oxidized Silver: With wear, the antiquing caused by oxidization (a design element, in this case) begins to fade back to silver. Less is more. Water, sweat, excessive handling, and cleaning begin to wear the finish down.  Avoid ultrasonic cleaning or any form of liquid cleaning, wiping your jewelry gently with a soft cloth after you have worn it.

Gold: Gold has the most resistance to tarnish of all our metals, and can often be worn in water (showering, etc) with little to no effect. However, all jewelry should be removed before prolonged exposure to chlorine, as over time this can damage the structural integrity of the gold. Dirt and oils may build up on your pieces, but simple care can easily maintain their beauty. Wipe your jewelry gently with a soft cloth after you have worn it and store it in a cool, dry place. If you would like to restore your jewelry’s lustrous finish, use a soft bristle toothbrush and soapy water to remove any signs of tarnish. Then rinse the piece in water and dry with a soft cloth. For a much deeper cleaning, we recommend a professional cleaning at your local jeweler.

Gold vermeil: Gold vermeil is a 1 micron layer of 14kt gold on top of sterling silver. This layer will begin to fade with exposure to the elements, namely water. Keep these pieces away from the pool, the beach, and the shower, and their finish will last indefinitely. Avoid ultrasonic cleaning or any form of liquid cleaning, wiping your jewelry gently with a soft cloth after you have worn it, and storing it in a cool, dry place.

Brass: We treat all our brass jewelry with a clear, anti-tarnish coating. While this will prolong the brilliance of each piece, with time, wear, and exposure to water and humidity, your pieces may lose their original lustre. Wipe your jewelry gently with a soft cloth after you have worn it. Storing brass jewelry in an airtight bag limits the tarnishing process. If you would like to restore your jewelry’s lustrous finish, use a soft bristle toothbrush and a mix of baking soda, lemon, and water to remove any signs of tarnish. Then rinse the piece in water and dry with a soft cloth.
